Setting the dates…it’s not just one
Indian weddings have one huge fashion advantage – there are multiple events which mean multiple outfits. Whether the Sangeet party or the Mehendi ceremony, each event calls for something unique, something memorable and something reflective of the moment. The wedding celebrations for Chopra and Jonas were therefore a feast of fashion.
First glimpse
Before the week long celebrations began in Mumbai, Priyanka kick-started the fashion frenzy at her bridal shower in New York, where she wore a striking white Marchesa gown. For her bachelorette party in Amsterdam she was seen wearing an impressive Georges Chakra mini dress combined with a feathered overlay and Hugo Boss fur coat.
Dress after dress
In India, the first event was a pre-wedding dinner party. Priyanka wore a western outfit – a Ralph & Russo two-piece wide-leg trouser suit. The champagne coloured outfit, hand-embroidered with glass beads and gold crystals, looked completely magical and was a gentle introduction to the fashion treats to follow. Next came the Mehendi and Sangeet celebrations. Chopra wore a fabulously intense, vibrant and vintage-inspired multi-coloured dress by Indian designer Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla for her Mehendi. She paired this with classic Indian heirloom jewellery.
The couple had both a Western and Indian ceremony. At the Western ceremony, Chopra looked striking in a custom creation by Ralph Lauren. The dress was semisheer, with a staggering array of hand-beading and embroidery. The floral and scroll motifs were balanced with lace-effect tulle appliques. It was reported to contain an eye-watering 2,380,000 mother of pearl sequins. What’s more, it contained unique and sentimental words and phrases, including her husband’s full name. A pair of custom-made Jimmy Choo shoes and a jaw-dropping 75-foot long veil completed the look to perfection.
At the official Indian ceremony Priyanka looked incredible in a glittering red bridal lehenga designed by Sabyasachi. The intricate work involved was staggering. It included hand-cut organza flowers sitting alongside Siam-red crystals and French knots in silk floss. It is reported that 110 embroiderers were needed to complete the exquisite work. Bollywood designer Sabyasachi was also responsible for the splendid green and gold sari which Chopra wore the following day.
For the wedding reception, which was held at the Taj Palace in New Delhi, Priyanka chose a classic nude lehenga by Falguni Shane Peacock. The traditional motifs gave it a timeless look, while the endless beads and Swarovski crystals shimmered and exuded glamour.
The wedding events were concluded several weeks later when the newlyweds held another wedding reception, this time in Mumbai. Here, Priyanka Chopra wore another lehenga designed by Sabyasachi. This time she opted for a deep midnight blue, with a heavy gold border and traditional embroidery throughout. A striking diamond necklace created the ultimate statement and sat perfectly against the sweetheart neckline.
